For those who cannot afford to buy a quilt we have these hand made bags from Guatemala. Some of the bags are lined and embroidered and some are made from the “Typica” fabric.
“La Casa de los Pajaros”, or House of Birds, was formed by six of our sewing students in Guatemala. (Pedro, Maydi, Sara, Elena, Bernabe & Antonio) Humanity Sews contracted with them to make tote bags, which we planned to sell at this year’s UQSM show in 2020 and on our website: humanitysews.org. Our hope is that they will continue to find retail stores to sell their products to and be able to earn a living throughout the year, eliminating the need to rely solely on the tourist trade.
These beautiful bags are all made from “Typica” fabric, which is hand-woven from cotton in colors that are vibrant and earthy. The Mayan Indians of Guatemala have a great respect for the Earth and love to use their colors in their clothing and accessories. Their most popular handwork is embroidery. They cover their work with images of birds and flowers, insects and tree branches, making each item or article of clothing a work of art.
